October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

By: Greenville Heritage FCU

Every October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder that protecting our digital lives is more important than ever—especially for Greenville Heritage Federal Credit Union members. As financial institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms, members are not only managing their money online but also navigating a landscape filled with potential cyber threats. From phishing scams to identity theft, the risks are real—but so are the tools and knowledge to combat them. This month-long initiative empowers credit union members to take control of their cybersecurity, stay informed about evolving threats, and adopt best practices that safeguard their personal and financial information.

Credit union members can protect their personal and financial information by following these key cybersecurity best practices:

Personal Security Habits

  • Use strong, unique passwords for each account. Consider a password manager to keep track.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible, especially for online banking and email.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing financial accounts. Use a VPN if necessary.
  • Keep software and devices updated to patch security vulnerabilities.

Awareness and Vigilance

  • Be cautious of phishing attempts: Don’t click on suspicious links or open unexpected attachments.
  • Verify communications from your credit union. If something seems off, contact them directly.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions or changes.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to your credit union and relevant authorities.

Device and Network Protection

  • Install reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on all devices.
  • Secure your home Wi-Fi network with a strong password and encryption.
  • Disable Bluetooth and location sharing when not in use.

Credit Union-Specific Tips

  • Use official GHFCU apps and websites for banking. If you are unsure if a website is a third-party of GHFCU, ask before you click.
  • Participate in member education programs. Check out the eFraud Prevention Education center for how-to guides, videos and interactive quizzes.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) website provides a wealth of resources and information about cybersecurity.
